I understand adding mouse controls for people who prefer them. But why leave out the option of playing with the keyboard like Elona had?
Caves of Qud added more mouse controls recently but thankfully they didn't take away the ability to play keyboard only so I can go play that I guess.
game just launched early access so I expect/hope the UI and controls will improve with time. I also really hope they at least put in 9 way movement because trying to navigate properly without it or with a mouse is killing me
I'm also hoping focusing on mouse is related to wanting to launch with the broadest appeal and that they put in full keyboard bindings eventually. I'd argue though that they didn't "take away" keyboard controls, for as much as this game uses or the original Elona graphics (plus new ones) it's a completely new engine meaning they would've had to been implemented fresh to begin with. but yeah hope to either get full bindings, or if that's not an option close second would be robust enough mod support that someone can throw up proper keyboard controls on steam workshop
From personal experience, my most frequent deaths in roguelikes occur when I try to use mouse control. It's just too easy to misclick a tile and end up doing something unintended in a crucial fight that costs you the run. This is why I stopped using the mouse in ToME4.

Anyone saying they were "simple" though is insane.
Z for zap, B for bash, V for cast, G for grab, f to fire, T to throw, X to examine, etc.
Once you know all the hotkeys it feels fine, but consolidating everything into a mouse based control scheme makes sense, especially since you're now actively managing your inventory, not just shoving everything into a global backpack.
I didn't need to check the controls to figure out how to zap a rod, I just put it in my hand.
The only thing I really miss is the grab hotkey, since this has the overload between "grab" and "pick up" both mapped to right click.
You don't have to relearn anything, because the current mouse controls are not going anywhere. This thread is about asking for a better keyboard support.
That's kind of a standard scheme for the genre. Once you played a single roguelike, you generally know what to expect from all the others.
Elona made things much simpler thanks to the Z, X, C menus that consolidated every action you could possibly need.
You can rebind that.
I did it immediately.
