Really dumb question about picking things up

Hiya, really noob question (just started playing) but when I harvest some things like weeds for example, how come sometimes they go straight into my inventory and sometimes they stay on the ground with the option to grab them, and a hand icon is round the object in my inventory, but it doesn't actually go into my inventory? It only gives me the option to place it somewhere unless I click on the object in my inventory with the grab hand icon on it, and then it will drop into my inventory?
I fully realise I am missing something really simple here and I'm just being really dense, please go easy on me!

By default if you gather something like a crop, the food goes into your inventory, but if you like cut a plant and it drops leaves/sticks they stay on the ground. There's an option in the game config to automatically pick everything up whenever you harvest/chop/mine anything. The only thing that doesn't get picked up with that setting on are gold bars and rare crystals from mining.

SEE! I knew it was a really dumb question! "Auto pick up Harvested stuff" was the option I needed. I'm just starting to learn about the games systems etc. Thank you very much Astasia <3
