Putit in Amber

It's my character's ranged weapon, and I've been able to acquire four of them, so far. Is it really that common?

That's just luck - my first game I got one, second game (over 200 hours) zero, this current game 2

I got 3 within the first year or so. It's been 9 years and I still have 3. Though I deforest a lot less.

Someone suggested that I arm my symbiosis follower one so she becomes a nasty turret on my character's head... and yes, it works. :D

My first game I found 1 on like week 2, and no others over about 40-50 hours played. My second game I didn't find any for the first 75 or so hours, then I found 5 of them in the next 25 hours. My third game I found one within like 10 minutes of starting on day 1. I don't like using them though, I just put them in a chest. They tend to sort of "take over" the early progression if you let them, my third character is an archer and I want to use bows, even though the amber putit is significantly stronger at this point in the game and doesn't use ammo.

The wiki's Weapons page says it's got a 1% drop rate from chopping down withered trees, and a 0.1% chance from chopping down other trees.
I mean, that's low, but you sure can chop down a looot of trees in this game.

Nearing the end of year 2, I got one from the 2nd tree I chopped down, and zero others.

Putit in Amber is not the best throwing weapon, it's just the best early game weapon.

This is the best throwing weapon. It's a Boomerang crafted from Dark Matter. It scales based on Strength to an absolutely insane level. Every +1 strength increases the damage die by 2 each

So... can changing the material of this weapon (turquoise) improve the damage and stuff?

It could, but I'm 90% sure that Precious items (full star) can not be altered.
