Alternative Pick Lock Paths?
I'm playing a cleric type, no lockpick skill whatsoever. It seems like the only way to be able to pick locks is by taking up the thieve's guild initiation by tanking my karma, and then trying to restore it again somehow. Seems like a long tedious process that doesn't fit my build at all, but I don't want to miss out on locked chests/doors during my travels! Is there no other way to open locks? Am I missing out on a bunch of great stuff/content if I skip it? Kind of a bummer. This game needs some unlock scrolls/spells for us "goodies".

Bring locked box to npc and pay them to unlock it.

You can pick the entire chest and bring it to an informer. They can unlock most chests.

Ah ha! Brilliant. Ty
Note that the above doesn't work for "elaborately locked" chests, but those only come from special means.

You do not really need to tank Karma. You do not need to have -100 you just need to get -1 100x and in between you can get any +1 you want. You should get that -100 by pickpocketing animals in towns and keep all the stolen loot for later too!

I rolled wizard and was in the same boat, the only benefit from thiefs guild early is always them stocking lockpicks, ideally you want a furniture item that's an autolocking lockbox, I got one from a furniture vendor for around 600 and built 1, you can craft one but requires microchips which are rare early on. Fastest way to get the -100 karma if you want to join the guild is to steal items you were supposed to deliver which is -100 fame and -15 karma. but if it's an item u WANT it's worth it (this is how i got an early futon bed), and u can just gain the 15 back before u steal again. Once your part of the guild u need to sell stolen goods, sell slaves, ect so you wont be ranking up anytime soon. So unless u got a autopick lock (which doesn't use up lockpicks btw) then don't waste the time, lug it back to base and let it sit there till u rank up enough to open them for the goodies. (normally early on it wasnt worth the 500ish to open them at the informants unless u can save scum)

The lockpicking trainer is not inside the thieves guild. They are in the inn in the room across from the guild, anyone can walk in their and learn the skill, no need to join.

Oh what? I must've read wrong then, thought you had to join the guild to get the skill!

You can get lockpicking from SHRINE books and train it by making a couple of "practice chests." If you don't want to break RP or do the thieves guild. The only difficulty of not doing the thieves guild is getting the chips to make the chests. You get loads of them disarming traps, but its tough. Just be patient. Once you have the skill you can train it quickly with both gamble boxes and practice chests. :)

Shrine books... I assume you find these at dungeon shrines? Nothing yet

Ya. Thieves guild just trains Pickpocket, Gun, Greater Evasion, and Marksman. The normal Derphy trainer does Lockpicking, Spot Hidden, Disarm, and Magic Device.

This is correct, you just get 2 vendors in the basement that sell stacks of 10+ lockpicks pretty regularly, though some other city vendors have a chance of selling them as well. You can passively join by just talking to the guy at the door nabbing the quest and just passively steal stuff from delivery quests is all i'm saying, theres no reason to go out of your way, you dont "need" to unlock it, though it's "free" if your gonna steal nice stuff from those quests when u come across them.

You don't need to join the guild to get lockpicks. Not only are they occasionally sold in other shops, using the alternate entrance to the thieves guild allows you to buy them from the vending machines down there.

Or go on a grand quest visiting every town and selling your tush.
