"Correct" way to play ranged classes
Newbie to this game, and have never played the previous game (Elona) before.
I'm wondering what's the correct way to play ranged classes, like bows or guns?

It costs so much to make ammo, and the dmg & chance of hit is so low... Could hardly pass the first dungeon.

Other classes, like mage or melee, are comparatively much, much easier to play... I don't know whether I'm playing ranged classes in the designed way.

The few times i had my npcs use those weapons, they were pretty accurate and devastating. But ammo is a problem - especially for guns. I've seen several artifact weapons that regenerate ammo though.

In early game you'd probably be better off sticking to a Throwing weapon since bows/guns need a fair bit of time/resource investment before they're viable.

As for what you could working towards - there's an attachment that has a chance to not consume ammunition which could be sold by Gunsmiths or come pre-installed on a gun/bow but it isn't as effective on rapid-fire weapons so you might want to stick to high damage, single-shot weapons. NPCs don't consume ammo so you could just pass those weapons to your allies.
NPCs of a Rambo Job/Hobby type (For your Home) could produce ammunition as well.

I've had my allies reload their railguns with no ammo in their inventory and keep firing. I don't use ranged but I thought having crafted ammo is optional for bonus damage? Or does AI just have infinite ammo?

Ammunition of a better material does more damage but NPCs in general seems to have infinite ammo.
That said, I have no idea if "preloading" a ranged weapon with better ammunition has any effect on your allies.

Canes, on the other hand, seems to drain the NPC's mana pool though I can't be a 100% sure.

I mean, if NPCs have infinite ammo, I'm more than happy to play melee myself and let NPCs utilize their infinite ammo lol.

If your craft skill is high enough, the bullet you created could receive enchantment level like +1 +2

AI just has infinite ammo. They'll use bonus damage ammo supposedly if you put some in a shared box
