if you need more than one you should probably craft them instead, but you'll need microchips (rare drop from mechs, can be salvaged from traps if you have the feat that does so) and nails.
You can fail, and the gamble chest is destroyed when you do. Not sure if you get exp when you fail, but you don't get much anyway.
Best way is definitely practice chests, if you have like 10 of them you can grind the skill mostly non-stop and get it to around 30 or 40 in a single grind session. If the microchip cost isn't doable for you then you can try your luck in moonportals, some people have a bunch of them lined up for lockpick training. I don't really think it's viable to train the skill any other way though, the exp you get from other sources is nominal.
you only really need one microchip. Once you have crafted your first you can duplicate it with kettle every month for like 500 coins. In two months you can have 4 chests, and you can gain two or more each months depending on kettle's shop level, but honestly you don't really need more than 4
They don't use lockpicking charges and reset after a few in game hours, so you can just make a daily ritual of practicing while in your base.
I haven't code dived but I'm willing to bet that you still get XP for destroyed gamble chests. I just buy any gamble chests I find traders selling and open them and my character is at lockpicking 40 after 2 years of in-game time. I've never needed to touch a practice chest. It does help to also keep your lockpicking at 200 potential via the trainer.
Only downside to it is that it takes microchips and they are hard to find.
Once I found a base with 10 practice chests which I used to lvl up.
