now the only thing that i know of that can change your material on things are "Shrine's of Change Material" that look like a Hammer on an Pedestal, that spawn randomly in map's.
and the material you use the Hammer on change to the material of the Hammer used.
so choose what you change carefully, even maybe consider to use one of the Shrines to make your Tool's gain Hardness beyond your current ability to harvest if you find a good shrine.
like the Fishing rod as fare as i am aware have an natural Hardness value of 30 unless using the material change Hammer, can't say i have fond a way to make better Fishing road's personally...
