Spells just take awhile before they get good. Once you reach a certain point with spells they become invaluable.
Using magic doesnt mean play mage. Nevertheless, a 5 charge speed tome costs 2000-3000 gold (depends on your skill), and thats around 30-50 cast (depends on your memory) Not to mention the investment to secure a stable supply of tomes, you still need around 500 casts to practice (lv 1 speed magic last 8 turns). And for none mage class all cost would likly be 40% more.
For none mage charater drink potions/scrolls is a significantly cheaper approach. By the time you feel comfortable to cast magic yourself, your character must be very late game
I am a late game mage, i could send most my foes into oblivion within the matter of turns. But I also know what i have been through
You could plan your next charater as mage, you will know
I absolutely do recommend picking up weightlifting asap and keeping yourself burdened at all times, that is an incredibly useful skill.
Also, always remember to feed your pets good food. They need stat improvements just like you do.
