I've cooked forever in this game and still have no skill in it. Why?

skills don't pop out of thin air.

You need to find a trainer and buy the skill with platinum coins (that you get from random quests or chests) if you don't have it at character creation.

Cooking can be learnt in the campment 1 day north from the starting area If I remember, or In Palmia Town, a bit further after Yowin village
