ok soo i just need some clarification...like i can't mine iron rocks whit my 52h basalt pickaxe but i can mine copper and bronze. also i tryed to make a bronze pickaxe but it as 45h

soo for example if i want to mine the material in the walls how much hardness would i need?(and therefore what material to use)

Hardness doesn't actually matter. What you want is an iron pickaxe, it'll be a lot stronger than onyx even though it has less hardness. Before making a pickaxe try the same material as a boomerang- the material with the most damage will be the best pickaxe.

Also, your mining skill matters a lot too. Try worshipping opatos and mining a whole bunch of empty soil blocks to raise your mining skill. Also make/find/buy a pair of clubs and equip them while mining, clubs always give a bonus to mining skill.
