For what its worth though, Against the Storm is a fantastic game as well. I've only played the Demo of Steamworld Build - which I did enjoy. I've played Against the Storm for 146 hours during early access. It is a game more devoted to the active building part of city builders, as it has roguelite aspects. So you're frequently finishing a map and starting new. To me, this adds a nice sense of progression, and the randomness of the maps and variability means you don't get to just settle into the same build x houses, y of this, z of that.
Both games have their merits, but if you're concerned about Against the Storm being an unknown, all I can say is the game is well put together, has been polished through EA, has an active community and Devs that have listened to feedback throughout early access. If the game appeals to you at all, it is worth picking up at some point. And if Steamworld Build appeals to you, I suspect you'll get some enjoyment out of it as well, although it leans towards a much more traditional city builder experience.
ps: Had a final thought, one aspect of Against the Storm I like a lot is I can sit down for a quick 30-60 minute session and accomplish a full city build - as opposed to some traditional city builders were 30-60 minutes gets you a small incremental gain on a single map.
To be honest though, I think Against the Storm has more replay-ability right now, although I love this game too.
Never played Against the Storm, but I've already beaten this game 10 times. Had a fair bit of fun with it, though each map is pretty short and quite same-y for the overworld. The mines you explore can be randomized, though.
individual games of AtS are shorter than a game of SteamWorld Build (but honestly, not by much). However, with AtS, each completed game feels like it contributes to overall progression, whereas once you complete a game of Build, that's it (aside from a small number of unlocks. Not enough to compel multiple playthroughs in-and-of-itself, imo).
Since this is the Steam World forum - what i love about this game is that its a gently guided experience, meaning that the game makes it fairly obvious what you need to do next and as you progress more and more stuff opens up but you never feel overwhelmed or lost. It is always really easy to know what to do next. I also love the train / trading mechanic. If you need a certain resource to advance you can just trade it at first until you can produce enough yourself.
Then you have the mining mechanic which adds another really nice layer to this game.
And there is a sandbox mode as well that isn't guided.
I love both but i prefer this game to chill out to in the evening right now.
Against the Storm has a demo, too, so there should be no reason to shy away from it for being "unknown".
That's why i prefer keep SteamWorld in my wishlist for the moment. I am waiting to see how the game will evolve. To buy Steamworld, i need to see more challenge and more replayability.
