Sheet metal, wtf am I doing wrong?

To build a sheet metal factory I need Ironium, but to extract Ironium I need an Ironium extractor, but the Ironium extractor costs 6 sheet metal... WHAT???

You can manually mine ironium, just anything other vein, just not the fluids. Just click with the mining tool on it and it will get the prospector icon over it. Now a prospector will go there and manually mine it. Obviously you need prospectors. The extractors are just faster as far as i can tell.

Admit I did scratch my head over this for a while myself. Click the pick axe then click the Ironium and the prospectors head will appear on it.

Think of the extractor as an automated way of mining it without using a prospector.
