The way movement works in this game doesn't feel like most other games, so it takes some getting used to. A great place to practice is in the Uncanny Streets, on the way to the Purge Event. Try to reliably platform your way on the coffins all the way to the top of the map, repeatedly, and you quickly develop a feel for how movement and acceleration works.
It's difficult to describe, but what helps me is "curving" towards a raft as it approaches, instead of jumping in a straight line toward it. This gives you a longer "runway" of sorts, as you land on the raft length-wise, instead of depending on their narrow width, if that makes sense.
