Looks like in 2021 there was an update to proton that was supposed to address it (in 7.0).
A reddit thread from 4 years ago talking about the issues:

Runtime config options for proton:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton#runtime-config-options
There's another thread that used these launch options:
protontricks d3dx9 d3compiler_43
I'm not sure if those will work because I don't know if dx9 is installed by default on the deck.
Here's that thread:

By the way proton 7.0-3 and experimental did NOT boot.
Is that 7-20?
Edit: Played a full hour with no crashes now. I'm confused but happy. Protondb user says there is a level with Lex Luther later on that ALWAYS crashes on him, so I will see when I get to it. I still am wondering if installing proton GE manually somehow got this default 7.0-3 version working so well. I'm clueless.
1.) Launched under 7.0.3 - crashed immediately
2.) Launched under proton-experimental - crashed immediately
3.) Launched under 7.20GE - loaded for a bit, then launched smoothly.
Didn't play past that.
4.) Relaunched under 7.0.3 and it works again. I wonder if the 7-20GE installed the dx9 files that are missing from the steam version.
