[SOLVED] need help running the game (error code 0x80070057)
https://i.imgur.com/qw1PItl.png
i get this error message when trying to play, at first boot i was able to view the opening cutscene and only once it gets to the second loading screen does the game freeze and this error pops up, clicking ok just closes the game, on every boot after the first this happens the moment i hit play, the loading bar seems to mostly stop at 48% and occasionally 52%
i tried looking up the error code and online posts suggested either a problem with my ssd (unlikely, i bought it a month ago) or a problem with me only having directx10 but a more tech savvy friend of mine said that might not necessarily be it
any help fixing this issue would be appreciated, im really looking forward to try this game as it looks incredibly fun

edit: developer kindly supplied a workaround for the crash on low end systems:

also worth noting someone else solved the problem by trying a different monitor, so it could be worth it to check your display settings or trying another monitor if possible.

This means that the game doesn't have enough RAM to load all the character select sprites. I'm working on a fix to this (just by making the character select sprites smaller), but you still might run into other issues during the game.

i see, thanks for the info! i really couldn't find anything coherent about this error code online

might be too late to add to this but im not so sure about the low ram explanation the more i think about it? i don't know jack about gamedev but i do meet the 4gb ram requirement and usually have nothing running in the background when i tested the game. that, and i just don't find it super likely a bunch of 2D sprites can push memory to its limits in that way,
i wonder if there's some way to allocate more ram to the game's process
Juno Sep 24, 2024 @ 10:25am
attempted setting process priority to high which i *think* allocates more ram to the game but that didn't seem to change anything, also worth noting that the game doesn't actually seem to take up a large percentage of memory in task manager though it usually crashes too quick for me to say definitively it doesn't just increase a ton for a moment and drops down again
that, and usually running out of memory causes every other thing on the system to slow down a ton, which is not happening in this case

same error, I do think I have enough ram though :/

How much ram do you guys actually have? I just quickly launch the game and it only used 141k kb so it's pretty minor on the ram cost. I imagine it doesn't use even .5 gb even with all assets loaded. So it sounds like its some other issue causing it.

error fixed!
I tried a different monitor, the error is gone and it finally runs normally.

that would make a lot of sense since im running off a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ old 4:3 monitor atm, usually it just resulted in display issues without crashing any game so i didn't think it was relevant
thanks for the reply! i should be getting a new monitor soon and ill say if it works then

I'm super late replying to this thread, but back in June I made a config setting to use lower-quality sprites.

Go to:

C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\RabbitSteel\SaveFileNonSynced

Open "config.ini" in notepad and change lowQualitySprites="0.000000" to lowQualitySprites="1.000000".

Also, in the most recent patch, I changed how sprites are loaded in; instead of loading all the sprites for a stage at once, it only loads the ones for the current and next boss you fight. So it should be a bit lighter on RAM, even without enabling low quality sprites.

ill try this as soon as i get the chance, thanks!

yep, just tried it and the game finally works! seems to be as fun and challenging as i'd hoped it would be
frankly i still can't wrap my head around how this was a ram thing since the game seems like it'd be really light on that but really what do i know
ill edit my original post to include the solution, thanks for the help!
