Trouble with remote play together

I can invite my friend just fine and he joins the remote play session, but we both end up controlling the same character. How do I get the game to treat us as two different players?

(Note: if it matters, I'm on Deck and he's on PC using a PS5 controller)

That wasn't it. Turns out you need to have the game's handheld mode setting on Deck off for remote play to work for this game. I didn't even realize that was a thing, but the R&S Discord helped me find it.
