When pre-planning your route in the waitress game (more a thing in the early levels, since the player's speed gets faster in later levels), you can't loop back on a spot that already has a planned route through it, meaning that you can't pre-plan grabbing two dishes from the same pickup area. So to minimize wasted time, I generally create a small loop (1 space away from the pickup area, then move down and over so that I'm now on a different side of the pickup area) then wait for the player to grab the first dish.
As soon as the pickup area is empty, you can pick up a duplicate dish and head towards the double dish table.
