Dualshock 2 not recognized
I have an original ps2 dualshock 2 controller, with a hama adapter/converter.
Steam detects it and all button inputs are fine, the master collection menu detects it and I can use it just fine there, but
when i load MGS3 no buttons work.
I tried enabling and disabling the steam input controller to no avail. Any ideas ?

What's the steam layout look like for steam input? Is it specifically the PS2 controller that's not working?

i dont have a precise idea of what you meant with the first question, so I screened the whole controller settings thing: https://i.gyazo.com/be46a41e09be2698ce4547d6cc09f27c.png

I have no other controllers other than the ps2's so I can't test with other ones.
KB+M input works fine in the mgs3 menu and ingame.

please be patient i have autism

You got the wrong picture I'm sorry. I don't know what it looks like in normal picture mode of steam, but in big picture mode when you go into a game, you can see a start button, and to the far right on the same row a controller and a cog button.

Click the controller button, then hit view layout. If steam input is on, it'll show you the controller you are using, and what each button does. If it's set to gamepad, it'll act like it's a 360 controller. Is it set to press xbox buttons or something else entirely? If not, go back to the previous menu, and click on the configuration name and choose the "Gamepad" template.

Viewing the controller layout should look something like this. It's an old version but the idea is still the same:

I went into big picture mode, and if I understood what you said, the layout should be already set to "gamepad" template, and it did look like an xbox controller set to press its buttons.

controller menu:

layout itself:

So there doesn't seem to be anything wrong, right ? which would make sense considering the master collection menu functions with the DS2. It's probably just something weird happening after the MGS3 itself is loaded up.

I appreciate you taking your time providing your previous two answers.

That's exactly it. So it's not an issue on Steam's part.

Do you know if the DS2 have worked with other games on steam before MGS3?

If you need a free game to test this controller out, try Idol Showdown. It is free and a small title.

I've used the DS2 with the following games:

Broforce
Bud Spencer & Terence Hill Slaps n Beans
DiRT 3
Enter The Gungeon
Nidhogg
Overcooked
Tekken 7

always had zero issues with all of em, even T7

Ive had this problem before
when trying to play mgsv with a dualshock 2 controller
its a steam thing
remove your controller and all the settings from steam
close steam
install the driver from here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck-OSKt9G-k
test if the force feedback works in a non steam game(to check if the drivers were installed correctly)
then try again with mgs 3
I had to use x360ce mgsv after installing the above driver maybe mgs3 needs that too
