Firstly The PlayStation controllers of the time had a limited number of buttons, making it challenging to map all actions intuitively. This led to situations where players had to perform intricate tasks using a combination of buttons, sometimes leading to confusion and awkwardness.
Also, Metal Gear Solid games often employed a context-sensitive control scheme, where the same button would perform different actions based on the situation. While this approach added depth to the gameplay, it also contributed to a steep learning curve and occasional confusion, as players had to adapt to various scenarios with limited visual cues.
Lastly, The control schemes in MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3 were designed during a period when gaming standards and expectations were still evolving. As the industry progressed, player expectations for more intuitive controls increased. The control schemes in these earlier Metal Gear Solid games may feel awkward when compared to contemporary standards.
I would recommend that you take your time to learn the controls and endure the learning process as these older metal gear titles offer an amazing story and worlds for you to enjoy it has a somewhat steep learning curve but it's not impossible to quickly pick up on what each button does on your controller. Furthermore you can watch guides on youtube to teach you how to play these older titles with providing tips and tricks.
Try read up a guide on how to control better.
I shared your frustration but give it time, it at least makes sense even if it's dated compared to 4 and beyond. I mean if you're on a controller that is, ♥♥♥♥ how they made the keyboard controls
In the end you do what you want.
you shouldve stuck with it, at first the controls take a while to get used to, but as you keep playing they become almost second nature, the game is designed around em, and after you understand how to play, you are almost never fighting against the controls
heck they actually grant you a lot of freedom on how to proceed
Square used to be aim AND fire. You press it lightly to ready and hold your gun out, let go softly to not fire. Push all the way and it'll fire. I imagine interrogate was also lightly hold square
Aiming functionality was moved to L3. The only weapon that relied on this feature, the coolant, was moved to the right stick to emulate pressure sensitivity. Since the right stick had no function in 2 outside of HF Blade, it was probably done that way.
I had no idea what I was doing when I first played, was basically a pro by the end of that initial playthrough back on PS2.
Zoft and TriggerHappy are making a mod that makes crouch walking a new action you can do. Keep an eye on it's updates, they are doing amazing work with the project
