Question about non-lethal runs
Does tranq'ing one of those guys on hovercraft count as a kill?

No, it doesn't. There are a whole host of things in MGS3 that don't count as kills:

-tranquilizing enemies on hover platforms which causes them to crash
-tranquilizing enemies on motorcycles and causing them to crash
-shooting an explosive barrel and the resulting explosion killing an enemy standing next to it
-feeding enemies poisonous food which causes them to die
-throwing a poisonous snake at an enemy, causing it to bite and kill him

I'm sure there are some I missed, but that should cover a lot.

You could throw stun grenades on the chasing part, but you could also use Volgin camo.

Didn't know about the flying guys not counting as a kill soooooooooooo.

Wrong... In both cases, if you do that BEFORE the "fight" with the Sorrow (walking down river Styx) those soldiers will appear, indicating they count as kill!

This is true, I saw it on an achievement guide which said they personally tried it. I've also found it causes alerts everytime for me so reload if you're going for no alerts

Oh my god, I had no idea the volgin camo's effects work during the motorcycle sequences, that's hilarious!

Both of you are wrong. I just completed a run where I did this and got the Peace Walker achievement. Also did it before the fight with the Sorrow and only the bosses appeared because they appear regardless. Throwing poisonous animals which kill guards do not count as kills. There are even gamefaqs posts linked in that post that give this information.

As for alerts, I imagine you were doing it wrong. Again, I did this successfully in a run I just completed, as well as many times on PS2 and PS3. You may have been too close or made some kind of noise beforehand, if you throw an animal at an enemy and they wrangle with it, it shouldn't cause an alert.

I just finished a run where I only threw a scorpion at a guard to get the achievement (right after the massive ladder) and saw that one soldier in the river with the Sorrow (forgot to reload the save) AND did not get Peace Walker. It also would not make sense to kill an enemy with a poisonous animal and have no kill. Same was already back on 360.
And nobody was talking about the bosses, as they always appear, even with tranquing them...

Edit: and the links you're talking about also CLEARLY mention that nobody in those linked guides talks about poisonous animals!

It also doesn't make sense that you can shoot an explosive barrel which kills an enemy, yet doesn't count as a kill for you, but that's exactly how the game works.

The game may make a weird distinction between using poisonous snakes and using scorpions (I have never used scorpions to kill guards).

The explosive barrel is an object on the map that can also be shot by enemy gun fire (or being accidentally hit), not the same as throwing a live animal directly at a guard...

Again, by this logic, feeding a hungry guard a poisonous animal which kills them would also count as a kill, but it doesn't.

Have you actually tried throwing poisonous snakes a guard and seeing the results screen?

I've also heard that drowning enemies doesn't count. IE: tranq an enemy, then move the body so his head is in some water / quicksand, then wait until he makes a choking sound. Bam, dead enemy, not a 'kill'

Actually drowning DOES count as a kill, so don't do it. I've never tried quicksand before, not sure where in the game that'd be possible? But if you knock a guard out and they drown, then it counts as a kill.

If you really want to take a guard out non-lethaly and be sure that he don't wake up is to hold up him while he his down, at worse you can go behind him --------> Hold up -------> Throw/put him down --------> Hold up while he is down (Hold = Aiming at him while bein close to him, you'll say "Freeze !").

Of course be sure that an ennemy don't discover him, well it worked when I have to escape from the prison for my FOXHOUND rank.
