Would you really like high res PS1 visuals?
I mean, it really clashes with low res hud, font and textures. It was made for 240p on crt screens, so a lot of flaws would be more visible in higher res.

In my opinion, downscaling from higher res back to 240p are the best middle ground. The aliasing are great reduced and the final resolution is still from PS1. I like a good crt shader too, but I understand a lot of people don't.

Here are some examples (you can change the image in the dropdown box at the corner):

I feel like you'd have a stronger case if you actually applied CRT filters on the screen, because the only image that's outright superior to high res is the first one.

Well, there are crt filters on those images, you just need to change from the dropdown menu.

Well, maybe a video would be better, static images don't show a lot.

What I'd like is MGS1 DELTA, so new graphism over old ones but with 2 more pixels on the screen.

Gotta wait for MGS3 DELTA first tho.

I don't think games from that era generally look good in HD. A few N64 games look fine but it also feels like there's something missing. Native res with a great CRT filter on a 4k TV is how to best enjoy these games. A 4k display results in the same phosphor to pixel ratio or whatever you call it that you'd have on a real CRT. Even better if your TV has HDR or really high nit count, the brighter the better. Some of the best CRT filters require a decent PC though because they use stacks of shaders.

But it's still possible to get a good CRT filter without high specs or 4k HDR. I recently played the Mega Man NES collection and it has a few great filters. Nintendo's CRT filters are usually great as well. The Castlevania Anniversary Collection also has some pretty decent filter options, so it's not like Konami can't do well if they actually try. I will not give this product the benefit of the doubt though. So far they've done the absolute bare minimum so I expect the future updates for MGS1, including the CRT filter, to be equally disappointing.

If you want to take matters into your own hands, just download Reshade. If you have a decent PC and/or display I bet you could get some amazing looking results with the CRT-Royale or Megatron filters, two of the best IMO. Maybe in time some fans might even put together some Reshade presets specifically for this collection so you don't have to do a lot of work to make it look how it should.

No
Honestly i like playing with the original visuals.
No mods.

As frustrating as some parts of these ports are (the steam deck issues for me) i'm really loving MGS in its orignal warpy weird graphical style.

It takes me back.

I never played it as i never owned a PS1 but i watched friends play parts of it.

It's pretty cool that they kept some PAL versions, some of us played the PAL versions back in the days so that's pretty neat.

Just like pixel art, people do have appreciation for low-poly low-res PS1/N64-like aesthetics even when rendered in high resolution.
Some modern indie games are made deliberately to match that style and even some official rereleases of 90's games kept the same graphics but the resolution is now rendered in HD.

There's plenty of old games from the 90's on Steam and GOG where the community would find ways to force them to be rendered in HD resolutions if they're not officially supported.
People wanting the same treatment for MGS1 (or PS1 games) isn't distinctively unique nor unheard of. In fact, they already did with the original PC port and emulation years ago.

Which wouldn't be a problem if there's such a mod that properly upscales the UI and textures.
Well, if people are actually bothered by it that it becomes a problem to them. Not all though.
Personally, I don't like how the MGS PC port's font is upscaled because since it's the Arial font, it looks generic and out of place. Apparently, it's not even the same font as the PSX version.

I mean the absolute pinnacle is what people like nightdive do which would include a new higher res UI elements and more

Even when nintendo re-releases old games they upscale stuff like that hud elements in things like 3d all stars

Thing is the lower res content is made for crt screen so at the very least I'd like the game to be presented with nearest neighbour and an interger scaling/pixel perfect mode as that's a good way to present lower resolution content on a modern display

Yes, I would. But why not have both options like emulators do?

The funny thing is that the Master Collection version is running on an emulator...

Do you also watch old movies in VHS tapes? Because that's what playing PS1 games in their original res feels like.

I agree that a good crt filter is a must, at least for me.

But for 3D games, downscaling from a higher res to native is better than native. After that, apply a crt filter and you have the best image possible. This is an option on emulators.

You don't need to wait for anything, Duckstation already has a crt filter ;)

This guy clearly doesn't know integral the VHS was and still is to the porn industry. No-one cares how grainy the picture is if the content can still "get a rise" out of you.
