Steam vs GOG
I heard that GOG has a better port that performs better?

The GOG version is the PC port of MGS released back in the day, while this is the newest from MGS Master Collection. I'm pretty sure this version is just an emulation of the PS1 games.

Gog is the worst version, to begin with you need a fan patch to make it playable, even with that it still have issues as some music are missing, some effects and such, the only good point is that the graphism are a bit better but you can have that with mods on this version.

The GOG version also lack a lot of content this collection bring since you get some books included, granted that would please mostly people who enjoy the MG lore and true fans.

The GOG version is the Digital Dialect port from 2000, and while it now functions on modern PCs, it still has all of the same issues that make it by far the worst way to experience MGS1.
  • The audio is awful. It's horrifically compressed, some music doesn't loop properly, some areas play the wrong music, some tracks are entirely missing, skipping cutscenes causes voiceovers/cutscene audio to break, etc.

  • Missing/broken post-processing effects.

  • No analog input.

  • By default, the game uses a font for subtitles that's rendered at a far greater resolution than any other asset, as well as bilinear filtering for textures that clearly weren't designed for it.

  • Missing content. The port is based on the Japan-exclusive Integral version, yet it's missing the alternate enemy placement in NG+ and some secret Codec frequencies. Certain features I won't spoil that are present in every other version are either absent or made worse.
There was a period where the GOG version was the most accessible way to play MGS1, but now that the vastly superior Master Collection version is available on Steam, I can't think of any reason to play such a vastly inferior version.

the GOG version is a re-release of an old PC version, the Master Collection MGS1 is an emulated version of the PS1 version ...but the emulation aint that good imho, i mean, it could have been better, but I still prefer this version over GOG's as I love the PS1 version
