Don't interact with him. He makes vague references that you've done something wrong, and deletes his own comments when he can't immediately find a solution.

With the controller disconnected, open up device manager.
Check under the "Human Interface Devices" category for anything called "HID-Compliant game controller".
If you have any WHILE the game controller is disconnected, right click the controller you see, and click disable.
Once there are no more remaining in the list, give the game another go.
Typically this issue is caused by mouse or keyboard software reporting itself as having game controller functionality (usually because it has an analog stick, or some kind of pressure sensitivity. I personally use a footpedal myself as a PTT button for discord which gets picked up as an extra controller in the same manner as some mice do, so I usually have to do this whenever I reinstall windows as random games will lock my controls out while it's plugged in lol.)
