Metal Gear series
Hello, I am a complete noob at Metal Gear and have no knowledge of the games. For anyone thats played them, how should I buy them or what order should I go in for the games? I think maybe MGS Master Collection and Master collection 2 "sons of liberty"? But Im not sure. I'm trying to follow the story so Im not sure how to approach it.
Cheers

I have played the series in a few different orders over the years. I honestly think that playing the series in the order that they came out is the best. The evolution of the gameplay was more enjoyable when I played them in order. The story jumps around the timeliness with prequels and such but I think playing the story like this is better than trying to play the story in chronological order. I did not have as much fun playing the series in chronological order. I recommend playing like that on your second playthrough.

It's ok to skip Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 and go straight to Metal Gear Solid if you don't want to play old MSX games. In the Metal Gear Solid game you can read a short story telling you what happened in Metal Gear 1 & 2.

Note that you can buy MGS1, MGS2, or MGS3 separately. Though they encourage you to buy the complete collection with some special features extras. You can just play those three games in release order. Metal Gear 1 and 2 are included with MGS1 or you can read the summary in previous operations in the MGS1 menu.

Don't listen to people who tell you to skip and dismiss the MSX games, MG2 is where you can see the series take shape; I always suggest pepople to start with them or MGS3.

Yes. MG2 the game where the player uses an owl to get across a gate. That adds nothing to the story and it's so silly it was never refereed to ever again cause it was so silly. All of the boss fights are comical cheese fights. The overall story is more important than the actual games and they can be summarized in a few paragraphs.

Pretty much everything that you think it's irrelevant or ''bad'' mechanically can be applied to MGS1, or you didn't realize both games share 80% of progression, level and mechanical design? lol
Cheese boss fights(Raven, Liquid, Tank), annoying keycard doors, 4 min ladder chase, 20 mins of backtracking(PSG1, Pal keys), lackluster Metal Gear boss fight, crypitic puzzles like having to look codec frequencies on the game box to progress, all of this was copied & pasted from MG2.

But that's the criticism I'd expect from the kind of player who are so quickly willing to dismiss the most fundamental aspect of a game (the gameplay) for story convenience.

You would be lying to yourself if you said someone became a fan of Metal Gear games today because they played the 1987 version. That would be delusional. I stand by my suggestion that it's ok to skip those games. Your criticism to the suggestion I made is what I'd expect from a snotty gamer trying to convince newcomers to validate your own nostalgia. I'm a old school fan. It's not the way to go. I appreciated the old games after MGS came out not before.

I didn't played the MSX games until subsistence, but I didn't expect a grown ass man to feel a sting and appeal to ''urrr burr tryhard nostalgia'' fallacy either, so I guess I did hit a nerve.

K so we agree then. The msx games are not as easily appreciated today. They are appreciated best after playing a few games into the series. And the summary in MGS is just fine for beginners.

More or less, MG1 is a nice relic but kinda sucks and MG2 has flaws which bled onto MGS1 and a lot of them didn't really got adressed until MGS3, although the game was ahead of it's time in many aspects with sparks of brilliance; It's the true originator of the series as everything else would build upon it, most 1990 games didn't even had a plot, let alone interesting character dialogue and interaction, you get a better appreciation of the series progression through the classic games.

It's a hidden underated gem that deserves to be played.
