did you not listen to the game at all?
Mei Ling literally tells you that is the dedicated save frequency, no idea who told you that MGS1 auto saves, it never did that and likely never will, it will make a checkpoint on each area entry, but that's not a save.
but listen to the game more, it literally tells you "if you want to save your mission data, contact me on 140.96, don't forget it"
They sound like they are so young they've never had to manually save before; that's compounded by them expecting autosaves on a PLAYSTATION 1 GAME.
But then they use outdated, racist terms that you only hear form Gulf War and Vietnam vets...
And all while, like you said, some how not hearing anything the game said.
