Fix for outputting 1080p correctly on 1440p displays
I'm disappointed they couldn't even manage to output the game correctly on higher resolution displays. I mean it "works" but it makes everything outside of the game get cropped into wacky resolutions.

Fix: Use Borderless Gaming. Set the game to windowed mode and add MGS to favourites in Borderless Gaming it should output on displays bigger than 1080p correctly without messing up secondary displays. It really isn't rocket science for this to be done by Konami themselves we shouldn't have to use third party apps for something so simple but this is the fix for now I suppose.

I just don't get the reason to lock the res on these games.

FFS the ~20 year old OG PC Port of MGS 1 has a fan launcher to run it at any res, including proper widescreen. Or duckstation which runs it perfectly, widescreen, any res you want.

Same for the OG MGS 2 PC Port. It got a fan launcher to add proper widescreen, any res, x-input support etc.

(the last two pics for the launchers I'm talking about)

Yeah I agree with you I have the GOG ports and while the pc ports aren't the best they at least do a better job then MGS1 here. I shouldn't have even needed to list this fix to begin with it should have already outputted correctly by default but it doesn't. Widescreen would have also been a nice addition but I guess they didn't bother "to keep the game has original as possible" I think everyone would have loved to have seen widescreen included.

Well I would use Borderless Gaming if they didn't force you to pay for it. Typical losers taking advantage of people.

You can get it for free as well if you don't want to pay money for the Steam version. I wouldn't call them a loser for creating useful software no one wants to work for free.

Strangely enough for me, I run dual 1440p screens, and even when I run the game in Fullscreen mode, my windows don't get resized, even without mods.

For those that don't want a 3rd-party program running, I'd recommend MGSM2 Fix by nuggslet, it allows you to play in Fullscreen, Borderless Fullscreen, and windowed mode with pixel perfect scaling at your native resolution, along with restoring lots of content (mosaic over Johnny, red crosses instead of green, etc):
