Multiple Protagonists?
Constantly swapping characters made my enjoyment of Maiden of Black Water just sink, does this do the same? I want to play as the same character for 90% of the game.

If I recall correctly, the swapping isn't as often as with MOBW. There really are just 3 primary characters, two of which are truly the primary ones.
You can´t play the same character for 90% of the game, no

The only Fatal Frame games where you play as mostly one character are 1 and 2. There has been multiple playable characters as a main feature from 3 onward.

I am hopefully going to find time to play soon, I have not yet, but from everything I heard this is not a thing with this installment. That said you do need to swap between characters as the story demands, so you will not be using the same character for the entire game.

From what I remember the reason why "Maiden Of Black Water" was like that is that back in 2014 when they made it they for some reason had a bunch of people from the same dev team that did "Obscure" contributing to the project, who wanted to try some of the basic ideas from that series in Fatal Frame, but then they changed the direction and it wound up being different, and messier, than intended, but they couldn't really reverse it at that point. How true that is, is anyone's guess, but it does make sense, and it's honestly one of the reasons I didn't make much effort to track that one down.

At any rate the original idea of Obscure is that there were multiple main characters and you could choose which one to control at any one time. Each character also had specific special abilities like a cheer leader whose pep squad background somehow allowed them to rapid fire a pistol, or a stoner who could pick locks due to their criminal background in doing whatever it took to score drugs. They were all high school students trapped in a school, so sort of envision "The Breakfast Club" but with weapon pick ups and zombies. From this description you might guess I was not a fan, but apparently the idea was for "Black Water" to be something like this with each character being more unique and switching characters allowing you to alter play style, or be more needed to solve problems. Obscure itself was inspired heavily by "Maniac Mansion" from what I heard, and never pulled off it's attempt, I tried to play it a few times and those attempts never lasted long..... but with this pedigree I'm sure you can see why any kind of inspiration from it's design team might have had the results it did.
