... not sure how relevant that is to trying to put out a 1m damage attack, but it might make a difference somewhere.

haha nice, I think the most notable thing about Willpower (especially for the 1mil damage achievement) is that it applies to every new instance of damage, so if you are "re-dealing" damage with one of the damage converting pants or the crystal rod, each instance can become a multiple of the previous instance, leading to exponential scaling
I've tried for a week to get something like this up and running, but the early game seems insurmountable since a lot of the talents seem too expensive to easily build into the system.
for me I get about 4 days in then I hit a wall where I need to have stronger defenses, stronger offense, and or more meatshields at the same time and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I'm not sure if a stat problem, (I go for a balance approach of STR/Will/Life) or a build problem (the most successful was the star cultist and then regen but it kinda fails fast) or both
The higher the cycle you start in, the higher your potential starting EXP. Sometimes you can start with 8 or 9 skill points (2 or 3 stat selections). You're also heavily bottle necked by what the monsters are in your first area. Hobgoblins and Ice Beetles are almost unkillable at higher cycles.
As for stat distribution, it really is about hitting certain Life breakpoints and understanding the monsters on the field. For example, Samites will instantly teleport to you and slaughter you if you have less than 2k life, but they only use that ability if you take a step.
But once you've reached those particular break points, it becomes about what the stat actually gives you. Strength offsets Encumbrance, which is really only important in how it affects your Speed. If your Speed is less than 5 the enemies will get multiple turns for your turn, which is a quick road to getting slaughtered. Conversely, multiples of 5 Speed will give you extra turns (dependant on enemy Speed, Wasps with 130 Speed will move 26 times if you are at 5 Speed yourself).
The way Strength affects Hit is almost negligible. You only need Hit higher than enemy Armor/Block. You only need Accuracy higher than enemy Dodge. You need Dex to cap your Block Rate at 90% if that's part of your build, this happens at 15 Dex.
Otherwise, it's all Life and Willpower, unless you're using Inflexibility to scale your damage, in which case just build that Life.
My observations may be flawed in some ways, I'm not entirely sure if the Acc/Hit and Speed thing are accurate, but this is what my friends and I have noticed in a combined few hundred hours of play.
I was able to brute force a version of this that died to the final boss due to some bad luck in the teleportation and where my minions were Honestly Starting with
That said your advice is like pure gold
that makes...... huh!!!!
Wait, if you have +300% damage, and can chain damage output... that means each subsequent attack is stronger as the built in 50% of the first damage can increase exponentially?
If I can figure out how to post an image I will add it here.
