Adv. FTL Navigation - useful?
Has anyone found the advanced FTL navigation augmentation to be useful enough to buy it?
It seems like it's too conditional on many things:
  • You pretty much need long range scanners, so that you know whether or not anything you missed before is worth going back to.
  • You have to be far enough of the rebel fleet to actually backtrack safely. This basically means you either only backtrack one or two extra jumps, or you're in a nebula, or both.
Seems like pretty much any other augmentation would be better.

It`s nice when you`ve get it, but I wouldn`t spend scrap on it. Yeah, don`t use a slot on it If you can get something better instead.

I imagine it might be useful in Sector 8 when you're chasing the boss around.

There are some blue options you can get with it, but I agree that I wouldn't spend scrap on it.

If you've got extra scrap and it's in or just before Sector 8 then it might be worth it if you need to jump to a repair station in a hurry but it's pretty much useless in the rest of the game as the advancing rebel fleet makes backtracking pointless.

I wouldn't ever buy it, and it would be the first thing I'd sell if I needed a bit more cash at a store.

Only time it's been useful was when I hit a dead end and jumped back 3 jumps into the edge of the rebel fleet. Would have been at least 4 battles instead of 1. I wouldn't spend scrap on it though.

From what I can gather, the only real use for Adv. FTL Navigation is if you have a beacon you've been to (eg. the Exit beacon) and need to reach that beacon in one jump for some reason, eg. low on fuel, beacons are too close and rebel fleet will overtake you while backtracking.

I'll admit it can be potentially useful, but I've only found myself in a situation where I've thought "I could really use that Adv. FTL Naviation system right about now," a couple of times. It's nowhere near as useful as the Long Range Scanner. Now that is a highly valuable system.
