finding Mantis homeworld and spiders
I have been trying to find the Mantis home-world to unlock the Basilisk ship, but cant seem to find it. I've found Mantis "controlled space" (in sector 7 I think...before the boss, and visited almost all the jump points there) but havent seen anything about a homeworld (or havent found ANY homeworld for that matter).
Can someone give me some tips on how to find it (or just tell me where it is :-) )?

Also, should I ALWAYS avoid the space spiders? Is there any value to helping the colonists vs. them?
What's the deal with them? I'm not worried about spoilers.

I'm at the Flagship right now for the first time, and enjoying this game VERY much!

Thanks for any help!

Spiders are a gamble, you can get a reward but also lose a crewmember. If you have members to spare then go for it :p Also, you can get blue options I think

The only blue option I have found is having Boarding Drones, although it's possible there may be more.
Heh. OK. Will only take spider option if there are excess crew :)

Any help on finding the mantis homeworld? Where is it?

You will randomly find the Mantis Homeworld as a hostile sector on your sector map thing. Unlike other sectors like the Rock Homeworld, the Mantis Homeworld has no minimum sector at which it can appear, and as such I don't really have any tips for finding it.
A mantis controled sector will not work to get the cruiser. if you want better chances of finding the homeworld, I suggest taking a path with the most red sectors.
Mantis Homeworld is somewhat rare, although IIRC the Slug Home Nebula seems to be even rarer.

I would never take a non-safe option with the spiders unless it's early enough in the game that I wouldn't mind simply starting over. Losing a crew member can be a huge penalty, and even if you have "excess" there's no guarantee that you won't lose your fully leveled pilot.
I had the spiders once and after that debacle haven't touched that option since. If I were you I wouldn't bother unless you don't like a crew member for some reason!
From the wikia:

Boarding drone: low reward
Anti-personnel drone: med reward
bio-beam: high reward

If you have one of those three, use it, else ignore.

Also, hitting a homeworld is random, you just need to get lucky.
Mantis Homeworld has a minimum sector of 3.

Giant Spiders are a 50% chance at losing a crewman or a 50% chance of a modest reward. Approximately never worth it. This is one I tweak in the Balance Mod (http://www.it-is-law.com/ftl-balance/index.php) to actually make worth considering - the reward is a bit higher and the odds of losing a crewman are reduced.

Are you sure about that? The wiki says 2, is it wrong?

The wiki would be wrong, but it's an understandable mistake. The game file indeed says minSector="2" -- but it starts counting from 0, not from 1.
The giant spiders aren't worth it to your ship or crew, but pass or fail, Sir Ridley Scott can make money off of the movie rights. And then off of the half-baked sequels.

I highly suggest you do not ever try the spiders without a blue event. It will almost always take a crew. Most events have some 50/50 chance of reward or death, but I swear this one is closer to 95/5. Other events to avoid doing is the magic eye and alien horse. You can talk to the horse without any risk, just don't take it back to your ship. I might eventually make a mod one day to remove death scripts, because they suck, especially when they "randomly" take your skilled crew rather than the excess fodder, EVERY, SINGLE, TIME. It would be nice if you had the ability to select who is at risk. Why the hell would I send my Zoltan to fight giant spiders and not the Rockman?
RNG can be a pain. To hit a home world it first needs to select if the sector is normal or a nebula. It then selects from an apropriate list (slugs are only in nebulas for example) then it has to decide if it is controled or home.
This doesn't sound so bad except it is not a 50/50 check, more like 80/20.
so for mantis you first have to be on the right side of the 50/50 (about) Sector or Nebula then you have to hit mantis outta mantis/civilian/pirate/engi/zoltan/rock so even odds is a 17% chance of being mantis using the statisitical multiplication rule (since all of these need to be true) we have .5 x .17 x .2 = .017 or 1.7% so every generated sector has about a 2% chance of being a Mantis Home Sector (probably a gaurd rail in there against the infantesimal (.03%) chance of there being 2 of the same home sector in any one game
