That said there a few very easy things you can do with FTL; the biggest easily being making your own ships with one of the tools in the official forums. http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2959 , there is one that works.
Past that I found a basic tutorial for altering events and sectors. A löt of stuff from that can be applied elsewhere: https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=18DgjbF054eNRNNRwg_cuDT2DatdRpnW16mzX32GB-Dw
And you can get all the tools you need for the job here: http://ftlwiki.com/wiki/Modding_guide
EDIT: And do look at the end of the tutorial for a pile of links to general modding threads.
:D Darius you have reinvigorated me :D
And do look at the other total conversion mods in the official forums(http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/) to see what can/can´t be done and other details.
Still a final advice for now; start small. Make a ship or 2 and get them working. Change a couple of names or events. Small steps, perseverance and unlimited copy/paste go a long way.
