I personally used rock a to unlock crystal ship + rock b at the same time since there is an ahievement for going to hidden sector using rock ship
i believe sectors are generated at the start of the game
The reason why people take the rock cruiser is that: 1) You will always succeed in the event of recovering the stasis pod thanks to the rock plating. (You can still get it without the rock plating contrary to what The Torus said) and 2) It's a ship achievement for the rock cruiser. The stealth cruiser will indeed benefit a lot from the long ranged scanners due to the fact that you can pick the beacons you need therefore being able to ignore the ones you don't need. But because the long ranged scanners can be bought it might be better to go with rock. I unlocked it with the stealth cruiser btw.
This, and the rock ship achievement, is why I ended up doing it with Rock A (The Bulwark). There's already enough randomness in it, having rock hull plating just reduces one of the rolls.
