Broken stasis pod?
I did one of the situations where you choose between saving the weapon and scrap or saving the stasis pod before the whecked ship is hit, and I chose the stasis pod. It says there's nothing inside, and that maybe I can repair is. It shows in my augmentations as "Damaged Stasis Pod". I can sell it at a store, but I want to keep it to see if it does anything. Any help?

If you find a zoltan research station they can repair it (removes it from your augments list), and it gives you a crew man and a special quest. This is the first part of a quest chain that will span multiple sectors so if you are close to the end it is probably better to select the weapon. If you are close to the start and know you can reach the end, then depending on the sectors available you might be able to complete it.

You will need to travel through zoltan/engy space to get the fix the stasis pod part done, this will give you a crystal crew member, if you can find the appropriate sector in the rock homeworlds, then you get taken to the crystal homeworlds sector, and have a chance to unlock the crystal cruiser

Whenever you find it, grab a Crystal ship how to guide and cross your fingers!

It's a quest item for the Crystal ship unlock chain. The next step is to get it opened at a Zoltan Research station. These are at beacons in Zoltan sectors and will give text about stasis sleep studies, usually paying you to partake in them. They can open the pod which will give you a secret Crystal crewmember. That crew member, which can't be obtained any other way before having the Crystal ship, is required to continue the chain. This is a difficult unlock since it expects you to visit a number of certain sectors/beacons in 1 run, which usually isn't possible or doesn't happen.

If you want to grind for the ship, I suggest using the Rock Cruiser because it gets a 100% chance to recover the pod(Rock Plating) and gets a second achievement from visiting the Crystal sector.(Which is where the chain goes anyway) It also has a powerful start on either variant; meaning you're less likely to waste runs due to deaths.

If you're trying to get the Crystal ship unlocked or get to the Crystal sector; take the pod. If not, choose the weapons and scrap. It's not a profit to take the pod over the first choice then just sell it. Typically, you should take the pod if you find it in the first 1-3 sectors. Any later than that and you're unlikely to ever get it opened in time to then find a Rock Homeworlds after it before running out of sectors.
I found it at the end of sector 5 and I only have uncharted nebulae until the end, but thanks guys. Now I know what to do with it next time I find it. Also, is the Zoltan research station you're talking about the same one where you sometimes find out that the scientists are being held captive, or is it a different one? And are there quest markers for any of this or do I just have to hope I can find the research station, get to Engi/Zoltan space, then get to Rock homeworlds?

Obtain the pod: Pirate/Engi/Zoltan sectors (distress signal).
Open the pod: Engi/Zoltan sectors (no distress no ship)
Use the stargate: Rock Homeworld (no distress no ship).

The pod opening is done in the research station which is the unmarked encounter you are thinking of. After this you 'only' need to go to the rock homeworld and find the right unmarked beacon.

Long range scanners can help immensely with this quest chain.

Would the stealth cruiser be good for this chain because it comes with long range scanners?

That or the rock cruiser which turns the first encounter into a 'blue event'.

A common tactic is to 'start scum' where you (on easy) rush through the first sector with the rock cruiser with the aim of getting:

1) A shop with long range scanners straight away.
2) A chain of green sectors for about 3 sectors, followed by a chain of red sectors for 2-3 sectors.

Ok, thanks, I'll try this next game.

what does start scum mean

Save the game, make a copy of the savegame, and restart from there if you die.

I would interpret this as save scumming. I had merely meant keep restarting until you get a start that can conceivably give the events in the correct order. Combining the two might yield a higher chance of success; I don't know if sectors are generated at game start or later in the game.

They do, but you can only see the full map at the end of S1. So you should rush there with a powerful ship (like the Crystal cruise... joke lol) and then save scum if you have 4 green sectors in the first half of the game, and 4 red sectors in the second half of the game. Exploring them all might be impossible in a single playthrough, so savescumming pays off.

OH. YOU ARE ABLE TO FIND THE CRYSTAL CRUISER. YOU ARE LUCKY. Sorry about that.
Anyways, I found it too, but I found no engi/zoltan homeworlds nor rock homeworlds. D: (There's no :ftlzoltan: homeworld!)

Game start. The sectors themselves are randomize when you jump in, but not which sectors are there.

The chances of doing this event chain without save-scumming is.. astronomically low. Even with it, it's pretty low. Starting with the rock cruiser helps a ton, except for the part where you're stuck with one of the worst ships in the game to start with.

No, because you need Hull Plating to get to the stasis pod, which is found in the Rock Cruiser.
