Looking for a game like FTL

There are a lot of things I like about FTL but my biggest complaint is that it does not have a free flight game mode!

Are there any games like FTL (simple graphics, even text based) where I can micro manage the crap out of it while flying around the galaxy improving my ship and what not?

0x10c is the closest thing I can think of. It's not 2d, and it adds a programming twist to gameplay, but it's suppose to allow you to free fly around a giant game universe while managing resources. It's still way early in devlopment though, and might not even be finished.

I hadn't heard of Weird Worlds and it doesn't seem to have the crew-related micro of FTL, but it looks interesting and apparently was part of the inspiration for FTL:

If you don't care about age, try MechCommander. It's very much a game that revolves around resource management, planning, or adaptation to unpredictable mission salvages; in this case it's Mechs, pilots, guns, salvage, and money. Missions do not change, but what enemy Mechs you salvage can't be predicted, nor can you predict when your own stuff is destroyed or pilots injured/killed. You very much have to adapt and just do what you can with what you got as you go along. It is challenging as well. I doubt most people could even beat the campaign on Normal without replaying missions 5-10 times or studying guides. I used to do it on Normal without ever replay cheating for better salvages or combat results; which is a feat because you could very well lose your best Mechs, guns, or pilots in an unlucky fight.

S.P.A.Z. is garbage compared to Space Rangers 2: Reboot / FTL.
