If you already have a Crystal crewmember, you don't need to do the stasis pod part of the quest. However, the beacon to the Crystal Homeworlds will not be marked if you didn't do the first two parts of the quest, so you have to be lucky to find it by accident, potentially narrowing it down if you have Long Range Scanners and can exclude some beacons.
At first, re-naming your Crystal crew to Ruwen would cause the beacon to be marked when you enter the Rock Homeworlds. However, that was patched out of the game.
