No reward for beating boss?

So I finally beat the boss a few minutes ago, and went back to the hangar. Apon arrilval I found I did not get the ship. Help?

I'm assuming that you played the game when your steam client was updating, so your inventory wasn't available. (similar to tf2 item drop alerts) You should have the ship when you reload the game.

Are you absolutely SURE that you beat the game for the first time? Did it play the happy victory tune, display the name of your ship/crew and roll the credits? Because the Flagship is a three-stage battle and you MUST defeat all three stages to beat the game. Doing so unlocks the Federation Victory achievement and the Federation cruiser. If both of them are still locked, then you haven't beaten the game yet.

I've just had a look at the screenshot you've uploaded to your profile. Unless you have another screenshot which hasn't been uploaded, that's actually the first stage of the Flagship you've defeated, not its final form.

When you defeat the first stage, it loses the wing on the left and jumps to a nearby beacon. You then have to chase after it and fight the second stage, which consists mostly of drone-based attacks. Defeating this stage causes the Flagship to lose its remaining wing, jump to another beacon, and it gains a Zoltan shield. Destroying this final, third form wins the game. If none of this sounds familiar to you, then chances are you quit the game before it was finished...

Hm, or he went around after beating the first form and the Flagship reached the base you where supposed to defend and it went game over. Though i havent checked the screenshots i guess. And i dont think Steam affects FTL in any way, aside from giving the cards, as you can run FTL directly without Steam as well, runs quite well from a USB stick, handy for break times. :P

So yeah you'll need to go and beat the boss again, remember, he has 3 forms. There's also an achievement on the achievements page specifically for beating the boss, on easy and on normal (which is more like 'hard' and 'imminent death').

The main way of obtaining the Federation ship (and both ways are listed in game under ship information) is to destroy the SECOND flagship, which is an event. Defeating the final boss with the Engi ship is a secondary method.

This thread dates back to before Advanced Edition was released. Back then defeating the flagship with any ship unlocked the Federation cruiser. There was no second flagship then. All the other ships could only be unlocked through their relevant quests and the Engi Cruiser as it is still today, through reaching sector 5.

With Advanced Edition you can unlock all ships without ever completing the relevant quests through winning alone and you could also unlock all ships without winning even once.

Seeing the boss get ship-gibbed is more than enough of a reward for me, really. But, if you want a ship apart from the Engi cruiser, more playthroughs would be needed or do specific things to unlock those ships. I have just beaten the Flagship with Zoltan A, one of those "fun" ships, even on Hard mode.

B layouts are unlocked by getting two achievements out of the three that exist for the ship. And most of these are easy, or at least, 2 of the 3 are mostly easy, or at least can be cheesed if you sacrifice a playthrough to achieve some ridiculous goal. The C layouts can generally be unlocked by reaching Sector 8 with the B layout.
