Like you already know, the dev team is very small - and from my own experience I can say it is very different to program a 3D game than a 2D one.
For starters, you need other kinds of artists than they probably have, 3D meshes and textures are quite different from 2D sprites. Even when we assume they would use an available engine rather than program their own, it's still a totally different thing.
Besides, personally, I don't believe th game would have been recieved as well as a 3D game - I really think the top-down "retro"-look is a huge part of the charm.
I get what you're saying, though. A proper 3D game in the FTL universe would be neat.
Really not that similar, but take a look at "Drox Operative"
It's a sort of ActionRPG like Diablo in space, only your "Character" is your ship that also develops, and the Sectors are randomly generated, with adjustable options (Size, number of species, etc). I really like that game, and was thinking about a FTL mod for it the other day, as it is very moddable.
But like I said, it's really more like Diablo than FTL.
Still a good indie (pseudo-) 3D space game where you start with a crappy little ship (as one of 12 or even more races) that you need to build up and equip with loot.
However, the pricing is a bit cheeky.
A 3D game would truly be amazing, i have a feeling this star citizen is gonna flop hard as they have hyped it up way too much, they are already selling ships which is just dumb and shows they are only after cash in the end......
While I am the first to jump on these games, I do have concerns regarding SC.
As I have for Elite: Dangerous.
I rarely see good things in games that flat out require permanent internet connection (as both those examples do, if my information is correct)
But agreed, a FTL-like game in 3D would be (possibly) pretty awesome.
Then youve never played freelancer?
Seems more story based and has square graphics lol :(
