I only have 2 shups the starting ship and an engi ship is there an anyway to get a new ship without destroying the boss ship?

There are two ways to get all ships but Engi, Kestral, and Lanius. One way is to beat the boss with the previous ship. Another way is to complete a mission.

Either do a quest, or beat the game with all of the ships. Except for maybe Crystal.

There is no need to read cheating websites or download anything, these people are unbelievable.

If you click on the LIST button in the hangar a screen will open up that tells you how you unlock each ship when you hover your mouse pointer over each.

To be honest, the crystal ship is the most convoluted ship to unlock, via its quest.

I wouldn't hold it against anyone to 'cheat', to find out how to do it (i.e. look up how to do the quest).

On a similar note, the mantis ship is very specific, too. You need a level 2 teleporter and level 2 med bay to get it, in the mantis homeworlds. That's not very intuitive. Plus you need to kill the crew without killing the ship, that the mantis overlord is on, prior. Without the upgraded med bay, or upgraded teleport, you can teleport on board, kill all crew, and not get the quest completed.

I cheated the Crystal in, and I then unlocked it on my first run with it.

During my 'let's play' on youtube, I unlocked the crystal ship legit, on normal difficulty. Just yesterday, without trying, I've unlocked it on 'hard'. I feel very privelaged, actually, to have had the planets align just right to get it (without save-scumming).

It makes it all the more worth it. I'm now doing a 'hard mode completionist' play of FTL. I'm trying to get all the things unlocked and have them say 'unlocked on hard'. That will be the crowning achievement of my FTL experience (and since I did the crystal ship, I feel I'm well on my way).

I usually unlock the Mantis cruiser with a lvl 1 teleporter.

I don't think looking up on how to unlock the secret ship is going to help you much in unlocking it. :p
