You can always kill and revive any injured crew (by draining oxygen) so they have max health and don't have to spend time dead next fight. If the skill loss that comes with that isn't worth it to you, well, that's the tradeoff when using the clone bay. If you want reliable, on-demand, no-penalty healing, use the medbay instead.
Well, I just beat it anyway, but there is no way I'm dropping 50 bones on a medbay on the fed cruiser C. You're already down a normal system and forced to use its flack gun. I bought a cloak which meant NO drones, hacking, or mind control... Yes, I could have nuked my crew, but their skills were top notch and not worth it. I got the engi virus twice on this run.
My whining is that it just doesn't make sense. I can have a medbay that heals or a clone-bay that heals, but that neeeds me travelling realy fast to heal....
I always just keep in mind that in sci-fi/fantasy setting,s you can come up with a lore explanation for basically anything. If one is absent, make one up, it's just as valid as what the devs might have come up with. So yeah, clone bay healing requires going really fast, or it "harnesses the tachyons expelled during a jump to accelerate natural healing processes" or some such nonsense. Is that really any less plausible than the existence of a "jump" technology in the first place - something you don't appear to have a problem with?
I know i'm whining about a mechanic required for differentiation of systems in the game, but --come on, if a clone bay exists, possibly with stored DNA, and it can heal only when jumped, but stores that sell medbays don't offer crew healing, and friendly ships don't let you use/borrow/rent their medbays, and you can only have one or the other, not both (even as full systems) .. .. come on....
Stores that sell medbays don't have them available for healing because they're stores, not hospitals - the hardware has to be ready for installation, not use. Friendly ships don't let you use their medbays for the same reasons they don't follow you around and help you win fights: they've got their own important business to attend to, or they don't actually trust you as much as you think they do, or whatever.
"You can only have one or the other" is the most artificial objection of those three, but again, anything can have an explanation fudged. Do you also have a problem with the fact that I can't have two cloaking devices or seven artillery beams? Or that I can sit around in an asteroid field for three months and the fleet never catches up? At some point you have to suspend your disbelief, and it just seems unreasonable, or just odd, to accept all these other similar and equally silly restrictions in the fiction, but to object to this particular one.
But hey, to each their own, I guess. None of this is a point I can argue too strongly, I realise that, so I'll back off now :) I can't suspend my disbelief on everything, certainly. Girlfriend took me to see Divergent recently and I couldn't really get past the "we somehow split society up into colour-coded groups based on dominant virtues and that worked out just fine rather than completely failing because it's absurd in thirty different ways" part. Sometimes things just grate with you, I get it :P
So, the dev team is aware of this weird anomaly.
As Katzchen said this will be fixed - live in beta now, should be live globally within a few days.
And now, as mentioned, 1.5.12 includes clone bay healing on the wait.
