I suspect it has something to do with how the Red Tail looks...
This makes me think that the rebel's plan is to just strike at the Federation base because, although they do have tons of ships there, they are the basic starting models and not upgraded-out-the-ass ones that just flew through 7 progressively tougher sectors.
It's not like the Federation's base even has any defenses.
Not like Tully's fleet is any good is it?
Red Tail is just a Rebel Kestrel.
It fits the description of where they got the rest of the cruisers. (them all seeming older variants of Federation Cruisers.) The Kestrel being an old ship, discontinued in the Federation.
I think that the Kestrel crew are actually ex-Rebels, who escaped the Rebels by living near the outer colonies which where just under harassment by scouts.
Being discovered by the Fleet, they set out to inform the last know Federation Fleet of the Rebel's weakness.
Of course the Rebels can't let that happen now can they?
"destroy the rebel's flagship" is not really a weakness... it's not even a strategy.
The deathstar was something they NEEDED to destroy... they all knew that all along. They had to DISCOVER A WEAKNESS to it, which was an exhaust vent. The second time around, it was because the emperor would happen to be there... those are weaknesses. Destroying the death star was, itself, NOT a weakness (if anything, the empire going on to destroy the rebel base on hoth and then build a SECOND deathstar pretty much shows how much of a NOT a weakness the deathstar was).
As for canon, there are lots and lots of contradictions within the story... but this point in particular is frankly weak and anticlimactic.
