Risk versus reward events question.
So, to begin, I'm not quite experienced at Faster Than Light(10 hours on and off); I'm wondering how other people treat these events, and if there's a 'right' or 'agreed upon' way to do them. Specifically, I'm talking about events such as "There's a Mantis who's fleeing from an Engi ship, and offers to join your crew if you fight them off." or "There's spiders on this station, should we investigate it?", etc. Those kind of events.

Should I only be taking a risk if I have a blue modifier, such as having a certain weapon type or crew member race? Or does the reward tend to outweigh the risk? Should higher risks be taken with certain events, such as those potentially rewarding a Mantis crew member(Particularly if you lack a boarding crew), or will they more often than not punish the player?

I'm mainly curious on how more experienced players treat these events. I consistently feel that I'm making the wrong choices about these events, particularly when running with the Krestrel A(The only ship I have, minus the Tauros and the Vortex), since I lack racial specific crew for safer options, but many of the events can seem to potentially reward a crew member(Or offer significant other benefits that would be very useful) while having a harsh punishment(Such as losing a crew member).

I'd like to thank anyone who contributes in a meaningful manner for doing so; I very much appreciate any insight given to a relatively new player who's looking to improve himself at this, quite entertaining(If brutal!) game.

World isn't black & white, and neither should FTL be... You're not Lawful Good and the rebels are not Chaotic Evil...

oh believe me, i know that encounter is specifically designed exactly the way it is, just to make the point that you have to be versatile and willing to adapt to the situation to be a good captain, just... darn it, why do i fall for those.

on the med bay, yeah i noticed that too after i posted, i'm not sure honestly if it was changed in AE but i recall at some point a level three med bay with that augment making my crew pretty much immortal, flew with the doors open one entire run at least.

Blue isn't always good, just usually.
i.e. Finding a rockmen-hunting mantis and putting a rockman on the comm gets you into a fight
Also never do giant spiders unless you get a blue option

One new instance of a possibly bad blue option is when you run into the trader selling an unknown weapon. There's a blue option for having the Mind Control system where you use it to "get a discount," which doesn't actually affect the scrap cost but lets you see what weapon you are buying. Picking the blue option disables the ability to just attack the trader and get some scrap from his ship, though.

I've played 400 hours so far and only 2 events that I don't use are 'giant alien spiders' and 'refueling platform'.

'Exploring asteroid field' is 50/50, sometimes you get hit, sometimes you're lucky.

The rest is 'let's try it' for me :P

Refueling platform is tricky because the blue option doesn't show up until you've committed to docking. If you can't remember what triggers the blue option (improved door system), you either have to take your chances or avoid it.

yeah, the refueling platform is nasty the first time you see it, only had to make that mistake once to learn.

also, i finally lost a crewmember to giant alien spiders since AE, wait that's not a good thing...

It guarantees they will actually sell you the weapon instead of running off with it AND you can know what it is up front. If you're considering buying the weapon then it is strictly better.

If you have the scrap and are in the market for a new weapon, it is strictly better. If you're wishy-washy over whether you need a new weapon or whether you want to buy one now, it may be better to just attack rather than take the blue option and see a weapon you really don't want.

It's not the Slug asking: "how many moons are there?" the worst one?
That dirty Slug just steal my scrap, at least in the other ones you can avoid the risk.

Hey there illusion. As mentioned, you can guaranteedly get the correct answer and get a free Slug crewman. In vanilla FTL, you could look for a common to know if it is 7 or 11 moons; in AE, it can be any number of moons and there's no indicator on the final text block, but the text is now presented in 3 pages that really emphasizes 'hey, read this'.

lol, I'm rewatching FTL:AE Launch Party, Justin Ma mention this event was designed to punish people who do not read, you got me Justin, you got me :P.

Boy howdy, I'm starting see this more and more during each playthrough. I recently picked a blue option without thinking, only to find to my horror that I had just set fire to a civilian settlement for profit.

Who needs rebels and pirates when there's monsters like me?

Alien spiders does seem to be weighted towards failure, but believe it or not it's the only event in the game I've received Weapon Pre-Igniter from on the first jump in the game (I frequently restart until I get a distress event that starts a run out positive--it really helps).

The giant alien spiders are always on my "absolutely not" list, as well as the mantis pod. Another, less talked about risk vs. reward scenario, is The Great Eye, a random event exclusive to the Zoltan controlled sectors and the Zoltan homeworlds. Nine times out of ten, I end up losing a random crewmember. Worst of all, not even the clonebay can bring them back.

What necromancy is this?

If you have a cloning bay feel free to take risks, worst that can happen is losing 5 hull.
No, worst that can happen is that you still lose a crewmember because "for unknown reasons the cloning bay didn't work". Now I'm not sure if this is the case with every event that has a chance you lose a crewmember or if it can happen only on some of them, but cloning bay is not 100% get-out-of-giant-alien-spiders-free -card...
The Clonebay can be reliably used to get back crew from anything except 2 things. Infections won't be cured so anything involving infections won't be safe. And metaphysical annihilation can't be cloned away either.
