Hard? HAH! You should have been here before AE release. It was even harder.

And died 3 times? That's absolutely nothing. I die 3 times before breakfast!

if you made a forum post because you died three times, then you must be really angry at this game, the first ship (and eaisest to unlock) is the engi cruiser, just get to the halfway sector (sector 5) and live. i have played this game for 20+ and i only have two ships and the b layout for the engi cruiser.

Well there are specific ways to unlock some ships via quests, so just throwing yourself at the game wont unlock too many.
Refer to this guide on the wiki, it'll contain many spoilers though it's the fastest way to unlock more ships http://ftl.wikia.com/wiki/Ship
(You'll want the Unlock sections along with any quest sequences you need to do)

Unlocking new ships ain't supposed to be easy. The game is intentionally designed so that you won't unlock most of them until you have fairly good knowledge of game mechanics and/or you get really really lucky (see: secret ship).

You can either unlock new ships by completing the various quests on the page that the poster above me linked, or you can unlock new ones by beating the game with specific ships, which was added in the recent update. This actually makes unlocking most of the ships must easier.

Dying 3 times without unlocking a ship is nothing. You probably won't unlock a new one for quite a few more if you're new to the game. For right now you should just be focusing on learning basic tactics instead of unlocking new ship layouts, because more often than not the new ships are actually more difficult to play with as a newbie.

It's generally a good idea to visit the various "Homeworld" sectors when you get the option, they usually have the quest to unlock the ships from the various races. The quests are usually multi-stage affairs where you need to visit several nodes to progress, so keep that in mind when planning your travels.

Still the best way (the best, not necessarily the fastest) to unlock ships is to just simply play the game. Get 2/3 of ship achievements (they come when they come, you don't have to grind for them) to unlock B layout and simply beat the flagship to unlock the next ship! So what if you're able to unlock Slug A after a special quest event? You're not going to survive the sector 1 without necessary skills.

new ships != more powerful ships

there is a wiki, or I could give you a file and instructions that will have all the ships and layoouts unlocked (except for the rock B and C layouts.)

if you want to do it by your self, I suggest getting 2 shields in the first sector and chill there, and once you get 3 shields you can't get damaged except by missles until about the 5th sector.

keep playing, and try to unlock the B type of the kesterl. It's one of the most balanced ships and due to a few bugs some of the unlock quests aren't working >.> just keep playing for a while till you get better then look at more of the easy ways to unlock a few ships.

just reach sector 5 with the kestral to unlock the engi then the engi challenges are super easy

That's not true. I have all the quest achievements.

Start by getting sector 5 and sector 8 with either Kestral or Engi (from sector 5) and go on from there. Some ships are a lot harder to unlock than others (Slug A, and Crystal A, for me), so you can try to unlock them the alternative ways.

I was playing as the Kestrel B and I finally got lucky enough to start and finish the zoltan cruiser quest. It awarded me with a zoltan crew member with max stats, but did not unlock the cruiser. Is this a glitch or does that quest just some times think you are not good enough for a new ship? :p

Bug, sorry! It'll be fixed soon.

Hmm, ok so it's not working as intended it seems. However, on my first try I got the Zoltan crewman, on the second try I think I got plenty of scrap. On the third time I unlocked the achievement. The unlock is kind of working, it's just that the reward is random.

If you don't want to read spoilers, hints on how to unlock the ships are "LIST"ed in the game.

You can access the list either from the hangar screen or "ship best" tab in the statistics screen by clicking on LIST.

Edit - The Zoltan cruiser unlock was fixed in the last update v1.5.10. IIRC.

Unlocking ships is pretty easy^^
Just play and learn how the game works. Dying often at the beginning is normal.
I'm now at 26h and I got all As, about half of all Bs and 3 Cs.
A few tips:
Pause the game often! It is often more effective to fire all your weapons at once or at that time were everything hits the enemy at the same time. (Like your first shot takes the shields down, but until your next hits from the second weapon comes his shield are back up)
When you destroy the piloting the enemy got 0% dodge chance.
Upgrade your engines for a better dodge chance.
Spend your scrap wisely. You don't need high doors/sensors/autopilot/O2 at the beginning.
