However, using it will take away all the thrill and fun of unlocking new ships.
Otherwise, there is no easiest possible way to do it. Just make sure you have a teleporter level 1 and med bay level 2 and hit every mantis homeworld you find in your path. Take a look at one of the guides available in the guides section of the FTL community hub so you know the options you have to choose once you get to the event that unlocks the mantis cruiser.
The key word here is equipment, some ships have different equipment and such, but I reccommend the defualt ship,it's in a way the best ship in the game,it has a balenced start and such, rock cruiser will run out of missile's engi uses drones which you DO NOT want, just play through the game normally but get a teleporter and upgrade medbay once, and plot a course to bring you across the most red sectors,I reccomend more but all you pretty much should need for the fight if you have the things you need is 4 combat centered race's (mantis or rock) 6 to be safe and have some level 3-4 shields,I think you should have some decent weapons so you can return fire and damage their weapons and crew,as for the fight itself,if you have a decent ship then I can give you some advice.
1 DO NOT destroy the ship! you will fail your chance at getting the thing if you do!
2 use you 2-4 combat race's to fight whatever boarders he sends over (it's a mantis what do you expect?)
3 after roughing his crew a little with your weapons send over your boarders (the 2 combat crew members)
4 sucess! you killed his crew! do all the blue options and boom! in your currant playthrough you have a new mantis and in your later playthroughs you have a mantis ship!
Notes:things that can help, fire weapons, these are semi-unreliable because they damage the ship when they damage systems, small bombs, these would be imessnely helpful because they damage systems and crew without damaging the ship! these are very reccomended by me,don't use drones, while this is techniqlly breaking my own rule since I said the notes are for things that HELP,I must say that you must not at anypoint use drones unless it's a personal drone or defence, boarding drone damages system's thus damaging ship, and any attack drone is just to unprecise to hit weapons/crew and just end up damaging the ship.
Maybe I should write a guide or something...
Pretty sure it isn't garunteed to be near the sun
The crew dies thus you end up starting the spiral of events that require you to have teleporters and level 2 medbay, however the air supply would require constant damage because the crew would end up repairing it from time to time again and I don't think the ship can withstand that sorta punishment
Nah,put it all into my speech, except for a part where you have lots of patience because it takes several times before you find the homeworlds and even more time to find the ship and you might end up making a mistake and blowing up the ship and starting the whole thing over again
They would probably frown at you for the rest of your life,it's a half-roguelike after all, perma death and generally being very hard and requiring just a touch of luck (not saying this is luck based but you still need a little)
It's semi-abusive, but you can "start scum" (i.e. just repeatedly start over and over again) until you start next to a store that has LR Scanners. It increases the chance you can actually hit the pirate encounter if you avoid wasting time in sectors where he can't be. I usually try to avoid blatantly doing this, but my quest for Crystal has been driving me nuts so much I'm doing it for that quest. Still haven't. (But I got the Mantis last night trying for it.)
Anyone else find it a bit silly that when you get this supposed dread pirate as a crewmember, he's a complete noob with no skills whatsoever? Shouldn't he be a badass?
Also on the general topic of savescumming/editing: there are a number of tactics often used in roguelikes and like-likes that are viewed by the community at different levels of acceptability.
Savescumming and editing is universally considered cheating. This doesn't mean it's "wrong" to do it, but if you win a game doing it, nobody will consider you to have actually "won" the game. However, it is entirely acceptable to do stuff like this to test game mechanics, or even to dive into the source code and mess with it (depending on copyright/license). Additionally, exploiting actual bugs (unintended errors) to do stuff like get infinite ammo is generally considered cheating.
Then there's stuff some people consider cheating that is semi-exploitative. Start scumming (repeatedly starting until you get a result you like) is one of these. I don't consider this actually cheating, but I'm not very proud of it when I do it, either. I do somthing I call "kamikaze scumming" where if a game is looking hopeless or at least just really bad, I get more and more reckless and take long shots to try to hit big rewards and make the game playable or get killed fast.
Then there are tactics like farming and grinding, generally considered acceptable by all but purists, but again, not top form. Some will consider it a challenge never to do things like this. In this game, that would include engaging in repetitive, otherwise pointless activities to exercise skills.
Then there are things like reading game manuals and guides written by the community. Only purists to the point of near-madness consider this wrong, but again, some view it as a challenge to figure out the game entirely by themselves.
