The point of upgrading an engine?
Whats is it? I don't think it has any benifits other than charging up faster if you plan on escaping which I never do.

So far, I'll only ever played on Normal, and have yet to finish a run. I thought I was bad, until I saw this question. lol

Upgrading your engines increases your evade/FTL charge rate.

As reference a fully upgrade and powered engine + level 2 pilot and engine crew gives you a 55% evasion. That's pretty big !

Never thought engine would be so useful

It is one of the most important upgrades right after a 2nd level of shields. It is one of the newbie mistakes to not upgrade engines.

You'll find the game much easier if you keep your engines fully powered and manned. You'll definitely want to eventually get enough to get 25% dodge change base. With fully upgraded crew, your total dodge will be 45%.

I cannot stress how important having decent engines+crews is. The only time you can skimp on engines a bit is if you have invested in drones and run with Defense MK 2 and upgraded shields, but do so at your own peril! If you rely on a cloaking device make sure that you have at least 40% base evasion or you run the risk of getting hit while cloaked! Nothing worse than cloaking to prevent that 4 dmg torpedo from nuking your weapons/shields and then it hits anyway!

If I have two crews available to man stations the most imprtant is definitely helm, but next is always engines. It is simply that good.

Upgrading your engines is pretty damn important it increases you evade and being able to evade is crucial especially when it comes to missles.

What do you mean by level 2 pilot? Like having a crew member whi is experienced with piloting?
Adds a tiny bit of HP to the engines before they explode and need to be repaired

high engine level + manuevering gives you a very high evade chance. You can avoid ALOT of shots this way.

Yes, he's referring to crew -- both helm and engine.

It's boring but useful to max out a pilot's experience by artificially prolonging a fight against an opponent that simply can't hurt you, because he gains XP when your ship successfully dodges an attack. This also works for shields; the shield crewman gains XP when you regain a shield point after having lost one.

Evade is actually really usefull. If you think about it, 50% means you dodge half of all shot, missles, bombs, drones. That means you'll take half as much damage. It also increases the effectiveness of the sheilds. If you have two shields, and you have 50% evade, you can take 4 shots because only two will hit. Of course, there's always a chance that you'll get unlucky.

I would upgrade it no matter what its VARY useful
