You'll find the game much easier if you keep your engines fully powered and manned. You'll definitely want to eventually get enough to get 25% dodge change base. With fully upgraded crew, your total dodge will be 45%.
If I have two crews available to man stations the most imprtant is definitely helm, but next is always engines. It is simply that good.
What do you mean by level 2 pilot? Like having a crew member whi is experienced with piloting?
Yes, he's referring to crew -- both helm and engine.
It's boring but useful to max out a pilot's experience by artificially prolonging a fight against an opponent that simply can't hurt you, because he gains XP when your ship successfully dodges an attack. This also works for shields; the shield crewman gains XP when you regain a shield point after having lost one.
