How exactly does Captains Edition Infinite work?
On Captains Edition, what exactly does Infinite mode do? Does it disable the rebel fleet? Whenever I get to a jump beacon, I get the option to either Go to another beacon for 1 fuel or go to the federation base for 10 fuel. When I got to the federation base, I didn't see an option to abandon my mission.

You are supposed to go the "1 Fuel Route" for "infinite" play. If that gets too easy, you can jump closer to the rebel Flagship (in effect, to the next "vanilla" sector), where you can then go the "1 Fuel Route" again.

It's so you can decide to pursue the main "plotline" or rather go grinding/looting/exploring some more. It doesn't disable the rebel fleet (afaik), but I think it moves more slowly.

Can't say for sure, though, as I have not tried out mods since Advanced Edition came out.

Whenever you decide to travel towards the Federation Base at an exit beacon, you will progress one sector, like in regular FTL sector jump. Enemies will get stronger, also in the adjacent deep space regions. This way it is always up to you how difficult the game will get. If you grind many deep space sectors, your ship upgrades will make you a dominant force after some time. But rapidly increasing upgrade cost will also make it more difficult to progress effectively. Fights might also become less challenging overall. Traveling towards the Federation base on the other hand will not only increase enemy strength, but also increases scrap rewards, (just like the vanilla sector progession.) A system no unlike that of regular open world RPGs or MMOs. It is completely up to you when you want to proceed to the next sector lvl and therefor increase risk and rewards.
