FTL: Faster Than Light

Minimal firepower needed for the flagship?
Running the Adjudicator (Zoltan) I've had a very good run in terms of scrap earned, but my weapons aren't making the cut for enemies in the last couple of sectors. I've heard that soem have beaten the flagship with as little as a burst mk. II and a small bomb. I have my doubts about that.

What are your strategies to pull out a victory when you realize you don't have the best weapons to punch through shields or to actually destroy a vital enemy system?

You have to have weapons that either ignore shields, or enough to get through 3 shields and deal damage. With that Small Bomb and Burst Mk II, you could teleport a bomb into their shield systems, and then fire the Burst Mk II. Assuming nothing misses, you'll bring down 1 shield from the bomb damaging the system, and the 3-round burst from the Mk II will bring down the other 2 layers and damage whatever else directly. The problem at that point is being able to survive all of those cannons, missiles, drones (part 2), and lasers the ship is raining down on you during it all, not to mention enemy boarders.

Basically, I'd say around 5 points of damage per volley is the minimum (3 for shields, anything extra for hull), but you should aim for more if possible.
Well, I once had a BL2 and an Ion Bomb. I also used teleporting though, so maybe it doesn't count.

I beat it once with a Flak I and a Burst Laser 2. I had hacking and MC maxed out, however. You'd be surprised at your options when you're only using 4 energy in your weapons compartment.

I find missles ineffective, especially in round 2 (the hardest round) when the flagship's defense drone II will shoot them down with ease. I only use missles when I find an explosive replicator. Otherwise I always run out at the worst time.

Anyway for the weapons to take on the flagship, you want things that fire multiple shots: Flak guns, burst lasers, swarm missles. The flagship has 4 shield bubbles, so you need a lot of shots to get through. Probably the 2 best weapons in the game are the Chain Vulcan and Chain Ion. But those are very hard to find.
I finally took down the flagship for the first time (after failing 10-15 times before) using the federation ship that has the artillery cannon. I had a halberd beam, flak cannon mk2, and the chain ion weapon. Also weapon pre-ignitor is so incredibly nice, it allows you to fire immediately when engaging an enemy.

Just make sure you sell off the preignightor, LRS, scrap arm, drone recovery arm, etc. in sector 7. There are many things that help to get you to 8 that are better served as scrap for engines at the end.

The Vulcan is better as it keeps its fire rate when during the cloak. Bu the Flagship will get back up to four shield bubbles. For any ion chaining weapon, the cloak will always reset the ion effect.

If you build for cloak and stealh weapons and you can't lose unless you have a bad run or can't collect scrap, or are new. I just punched though a rock-A run on hard and didn't lose any hull in the first 2 mothership rounds. I only had trouble in the third because they initially transported directly into my doors (and sent a total of 6-7 boarders, grrrr).

It's not hard to protect chaining weapons with a proper set-up and proper timing. I'd love a vulcan every time because the way I play is very laser based and ike every other thread, it all comes down to timing and fluttering the space-bar...
vulcan + some sort of beam (glaive? hoho.) would be a good combo.

Well that takes 8 power. I'd prefer a vulcan plus a couple/few ions to take the brunt of any hits while the vulcan spools up.

i agree, especially in round 2 with the defense drone...

What I am saying is sometimes if you have weak weapons when you arrive at the boss you can use strategically use missles (stockpiled) to pull off a win.. missles suck, bombs are better etc etc..

If you can kill off (all but 1 or most) the crew in round 1 it really helps.. especially on hard mode where the missle launcher is connected to the main ship..

also if all the crew is dead then you can use boarding to defeat the boss as it auto heals

not really an ideal setup for victory... more like using anything u can for the win

for example if I have really weak weapons late in the game I would probably buy a teleporter right away if given the chance

Im pretty sure I've beaten the boss on hard with only a single burst laser as my only weapon.. I tried looking for the thread, but it was too buried...

Level 3 teleporter will shut down the flagship completely, just pray it doesn't get hacked.
I just won with the Engi. I only had a missile a chain laser and the ion blast and combat drone 1 they start with. I never got any good weapons. I got lucky with the missiles i had both hit first shot and light a fire in the shield room. The ion blast doesn't do alot of damage but it shoots every 4 seconds, this is enough to keep their shield down. I had the chain laser fire on one of the weapons, one of the missiles so they wouldn't bypass my level 4 shields. I then switched teh missile to engines to slow down their dodge then another weapon. I didn't have cloak or hack or anything like that either. Also the drone does good damage with their shields down. It was VERY close, I barely won.

Please specify dificulty level, crew, and teleporter bay before making such a statement...
