Trouble Running Game

First let me say that the game was previously working on all 3 of my computers. The problems I'm about to describe have cropped up in the past week or two.

FTL is still loading and running OK on my work laptop with Win 7. No issues there ATM.

On my tower running Win XP the game has started loading and running in an invisible window. I can hear the main menu music and even hear bleeps as I move the mouse around and the cursor apparently passes over invisible buttons. The cursor is also invisible, but if I alt-tab to another window the cursor will become visible again and the FTL window tab appears in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If I again make FTL the active window the cursor disappears and the FTL tab disappears from the taskbar. The only way to get out of this is calling up Task Manager and using that to close FTL, or reboot. I've checked the files integrity in Steam and it reported no problems.

On my personal laptop running Win 8.1 the small window stating that Steam is loading FTL comes up and it then hangs there forever, I never reach the FTL loading screen or the menu. All I can do is click the close button in the upper right corner. I have not yet tried to check the files integrity on this system.

The files on the personal laptop wouldn't verify. The verify window also hung up indefinitely like trying to launch the game. Then I found that trying to run Talisman would also hang up loading on this machine. So I uninstalled FTL, rebooted, and reinstalled it and now it loads OK. Maybe rebooting will fix the problem on the Win XP tower.
