Actually you can dodge ASB, either with your native dodge or using cloaking, so if you can get your native dodge to 40%, you can have a 100% of dodging the ASB by cloaking it.
Also, if you have six engine bars, you can get warp on to the next sector before the ASB fires.
It's rarely worth bothering to fight for the "reward" of 1 fuel, though. But sometimes, it's worth taking the risk of getting overrun to hit one more quest or in the occasional situation where there's a cul-de-sac of 3-4 beacons you can hit.
If you realize in advance you're going to get stuck getting overrun before escaping the sector, consider dumping all your scrap into upgrading engines to be able to escape as quickly as possible.
"Tough Fight" as in end game enemies you find in Sector 8 and The Last Stand. If you're still early game (Sectors 1-3), the odds are pretty good that such a ship will totally pwn yours, and you'll be lucky to last long enough to jump to the next beacon.
The problem is if you're unlucky enough to get a really nasty one and you have one of the weaker starting ships with low engines, you're liable to take more damage than is worth taking. It's just rarely worth it.
