Multiverse is as good as a sequel. It is not quite as well balanced as the original, but adds a vast amount of new content and ships, without the kitchen sink approach of CE.
That said I seriously recommend it. It's hundreds of hours of new content without even replaying much.
However, that comes with the huge caveat that I am not a typical player, and also that what I enjoy about the game might be completely different from what you enjoy about it.
I don't agree that Multiverse is "as good as a sequel", simply because I cannot imagine Subset Games making anything like it. Its design philosophy is almost exactly opposed to theirs.
I think it would be more accurate to describe Multiverse as a fan-mad mod that drastically changes and expands the game. It has a huge amount of content and many players love it.
My preference is for cosmetic and quality-of-life mods, some of which I made or enhanced. Here are the mods I use: https://mikehopley.github.io/Mikes-FTL-mods/
