Are the rebels actually the good guys?
Aside from the fact that they both think they are doing the right thing, the rebels are rebelling for something. What are your thoughts?

We haven't got much information on their policies, other than the fact that they are implied human supremacists. We're not even sure about the extent of their xenophobia.

pretty much this, not a whole lot of the backstory gets explained.

it might help to think of nether side as "good" or "bad", rather that we are one side, they are the other, we are at war for our own self-justifiable reasons. our perspective is a bit skewed because we only ever play as feds, we never see things from the rebels point-of-view.

i really wonder what the game would be like if we could play as just a random merc. a choice between helping the fed ship get the info to the last fleet, or help the rebels hunt them down. or screw it, just run around the galaxy and be a pirate/good samaritan.

EDIT: hmm, reading what i just wrote, seems to be more a collection of thoughts rather then a proper reply.

Captain's Edition actually covers this pretty well, but it's sadly non-canon.

I haven't played it enough to actually know, but it lets you play from the perspectives mentioned above, gives more detail on the different factions' motivations, and even gives the captain a personal narrative, such as showing that he has personal regret for his actions.

Well, as I brought up in my own thread on the topic, the rebels are the most powerful faction in the galaxy, and they rebelled from a (presumably) democratic Federation. So there are really only three options: (a) the rebels have massive popular support and are the good guys (b) the rebels have massive popular support and the entire former Federation was corrupt, or (c) the rebels are a military junta...

considering how about half of the rebel ships we encounter seem to be AI controled, i would say C. the idea that the rebel were able to develop the technology, and basicly mass produce an army sounds very plausable to me.

that may be what makes the flagship so special, ether it houses the master control relay for these ships, or its AI is the master pattern for the lesser drone ships. taking it out will ether stop production, or disable half the rebel fleet.
rebels are racist scum that seek to enslave all none-humans. the abundance of events when you find a rebel auto-scout or a fighter terrorize a planet or a space colony are too many to count.

add the fact that they kill anyone who mere SYMPATHIZE with the federation and no shame in lying and tricking their adverseries.
and you've got one vicious faction trying to conquer a new galactic empire. they deserve no mercy.

Facts of life: there are no "good guys" or "bad guys" in warfare. There is only us and them.

There are no winners in war. Only losers.

I always saw FTL Rebels the same way as NTF is portrayed in FreeSpace 2.

IMO they are human supremacists but it is largely the corruption and incompetence of the Federation that led to them being able to take over.

So all war boils down to moral equivalence?

Nah, I don't think so.

They are bad they belive that humans are the supieor race and are attemping to take over the galaxy with force. Unlike the federation that usally only use diplomacy to unite the galaxy unless they are forced to or need to use force. Rebels are also killing millions of aliens and even humans. They are pratically nazis. the jews are aliens the fed humans are american troops and rebels are nazis flagship is hitler.
